On November the 6th – 8th twenty-seven students from Turner County Middle School attended the 40th Annual Junior Youth Assembly in Atlanta, Georgia. At Junior Youth Assembly students got to see first-hand how laws are made in the State of Georgia. Four of our students served as Senators and twenty-three served as Representatives. All of the students attending JYA wrote and submitted their own bills, but only forty-eight were accepted to be debated by the students. Of the forty-eight bills accepted, nine of them belonged to students from our school.
For most of our students this was the first opportunity that they had ever had to speak in front of more than a few people. They did an excellent job representing their bills and Turner County. The group was accompanied by Vanessa and Bobby Sylvester, Shelley Robinson, Bill Clark and Rene` Hasty. The students who attended the conference were First Row: Elizabeth Velasco, Michael Bryan II, Brady Coffey and Joey Williford, Jacob Burgess Second Row: Chloe Bowden, Macie Rae Furney, Blaykelyn Stephens, Madison McMillian and Colton Sylvester. Third Row: Naqirah Garcia, Alexus Hodge, Tatiyana Holley, Tristin Turner and Zekira Coley. Fourth Row: Chae Thomas, A’Miracle Rhodes, Alex Taylor, Tamera Wright and Na’Khaya Roberson. Fifth Row: Jace Wynn, Nalecia Alford and Chloe Fowler. Sixth Row: Zach Brown, Alexis Callejas, Cierra Boney and Demarrion Wilson.
The students would like to extend a special “Thank you!” to the people and businesses in Turner County who contributed to our cause by participating in our “Tanks for Turner” fundraiser. Without the incredible support of our community we would not have been able to have as many students participate in this awesome educational experience.
